Application Year 2010-2011 Results

Anton and Denys Bastov of Chernihiv (USA/USA Seminar 2008) have enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania, from which they both earned full four year college scholarships with room and board. They attended School 1 and are the third and fourth students from this high school to have earned full four year college scholarships directly as a result of our program. They are also our first set of identical twins to have earned scholarships. Anton and Denys both also won two year scholarships with room and board to Leysin American (www.las.ch) in Switzerland. Anton is a former gold medal winner in the all Ukrainian English language Olympiad. Both he and Denys have also been elected to the Union of Gifted Children of Ukraine (www.som.org.ua). Anton finished Leysin as the top student in his year. Denys finished third. Both plan to major in computer science.

Roman Yevstihnyeyev (USA/USA Seminar 2008) has entered Harvard with a full four year scholarship with room and board. Roman who is from Poltava had the highest ZNO for Poltava oblast in 2008. He is a two time gold medal winner in the all Ukrainian Economics Olympiad. He is also a Ukrainian Presidential Scholar. He has also won medals in the European chess puzzle championships. He finished Choate (www.choate.edu) from which he also earned a two year scholarship with room and board. He graduated as valedictorian from Choate. He plans to major in math or economics.

Irina Bocharova (USA/USA Seminar 2009) of Zaporizhzhia has entered Providence College in Rhode Island. She earned a Presidential Scholarship covering tuition, room, and board. Irina graduated from Lycee 99 in Zaporizhzhia before enrolling in Zaporizhzhia National Technical University. Previously, Iryna had been an FSA/FLEX exchange student in Kalamazoo (MI).

The college scholarship earnings of these four students come to over to $870,000 over four years. That brings the total scholarships earnings of our students to over $9,000,000 since the inception of the program. We now have fifty four full four year college scholarship with room and board winners. We include only those scholarship earnings that relate to preparatory school and undergraduate colleges and only those students who earn “full rides”.

Our scholarship earnings are smaller this year since we did not take any new students in 2010 taking a well earned sabbatical. Students from previous years were still in the pipeline. We thus fulfilled our commitments to the students we took in previous years. We have seven students from the 2007, 2008, and 2009 seminar who have yet to apply to college. We have another student who will apply again to preparatory schools in 2011-2012 application season.

In total, six students applied to colleges this year. Two students applied to college preparatory schools. Of these, one for the first time. She, a superb student, is still very young and should do extremely well next year when applying to prep schools.

Support for the USA/USA Seminar 2009 came from funds contributed by Yuri Omelchenko of New York City and Mr. Adrian Slywotsky of Cambridge MA.
